Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo, better known as Jokowi, has expressed hope that Indonesia's largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) will empower the communities through agriculture.
"The tradition of NU is based on agriculture, and thus, the organization should empower the communities through the agriculture sector," Jokowi stated during a discussion on NU centenary here on Wednesday night.
According to him, the NU clerics should have more knowledge of agriculturally related applied technology and high technology, and can teach it to their students.
Jokowi pointed out that the presence of a cleric with basic knowledge of agriculture in a certain community will have a direct impact on their livelihood.
On the occasion, the Jakarta governor also criticized a lot of NU cadres who have more interest in politics than preaching.
Jokowi also noted that as Muslims, those who engage in political realm should have honesty and integrity, rather than vying to seize power for self-enrichment. (*)
